The Brightgreen Light Up Kenya Project launches today!
22nd September 2014
We are extremely excited to announce the launch of Light Up Kenya, our charity initiative to help improve access to light where it is needed most.
Light Up Kenya is simple: For every Australian home lit up using Brightgreen lights, we will light up a home in Kenya with a solar lighting kit, complete with a solar panel, a power storage system, two LED bulbs and a mobile phone charging dock.
Brightgreen’s connection with Kenya began in 2012, when we established distributorship in Mombasa. While our partners there provide lighting for families that have reliable access to electricity, we quickly realised that there was a need for a lighting solution that could be used by off-grid families.
Lighting is a big issue in this part of the world, especially for residents in rural areas. As an alternative, they either use paraffin lamps (which are dangerous, expensive and cause respiratory diseases that often lead to death), or do without (which means compromised business growth and education as residents cannot work or study at night).
Working together with Sunlite Solar—a LED aid distribution company founded by Derek Steel, a Kenyan who lived in Perth for a decade before returning to his home country—we hope to improve the quality of life for these people. It’s something that we really believe in making a success, and to do that we need your help!
