The term ‘lux’ originates from the Latin word ‘lux’ which translates to ‘light.’ It refers to an illumination unit emitted when one lumen is equally dispersed across a square meter area. An equivalent depiction of a lux can be illustrated by visualizing a uniform light source, such as an International Candle (also known as candela), which is placed at a one-meter distance from a surface. This light source would yield the same amount of illumination of one lux.
